If you're not home a lot I would say get a cat because they don't need much taking care of. A dog is ideal but they take a lot of time and effort.
What I would do is call a family meeting and write down how much time someone is at home and how much time would be available to devote to a pet. Then write down what everyone would like and see where the want and the do-able meet.
If you want a dog I suggest going to http://www.puppyfind.com
They will help match the perfect breed(s) to your particular family needs.
Good luck and have fun picking out your new family member.

A cat or dog, something cuddly. Also hamsters, gerbils, ferrets - are easy to care for, and don't take as much space/money.

terrier breeds are small for the most part and very well tempered. i have a terrier mix, she's the sweetest and smartest dog. small, well tempered dogs or animals for that matter are the best bet.

chiuahah they are so sweet and friendly and they love to cuddle.. but they are not to be trusted with young ones ( they could be too rough or drop them)
they are just so sweet
-they dont shed a lot
- ''accidents'' are really easy to clean before you train them
