Being righteous simply means you do the right thing. We read the Bible to see God's ways, and we commune with God to learn His character. Then, you simply do as you are led.
You look at a situation and think, "what is the best way to handle this" and that's righteousness.

No human can be righteous. God says our righteousness is as "filthy rags".
The way we become righteous is by accepting the righteousness of Jesus. HIS righteousness cleanses us and heals us and sanctifies us. Only he was sin-free.
We receive his righteousness when we: accept the fact that we are sinners, accept that God sent Jesus to die for OUR sins, profess this to God and accept Jesus into our heart. We are then filled with God's holy presence and we are born again spiritually. After that we begin a sanctification process that is done by the Holy Spirit.
This journey is the most awesome experience that can be had in this world.

Self righteousness is thinking you are all of that and then some that you helped someone. Righteous is helping someone and saying nothing. Righteousness comes with love, compassion and mercy.

Welcome to the world of the disciple or learner.
Righteous is a key to the Christian faith as Paul came to define it in his letters and Luther interpret it for the Reformation.
In the story of Abram, Genesis, it is used (15:6) in conjunction w/ believing God. The word used for "Believe" is synominous with our "A-men" or indeed. Righteousness becomes an AMEN or LET IT BE to God's varied commands and directions.

Study the first 5 -6 chapters of Romans and you will find that there is none righteous. We are made righteous by faith in Christ, not by anything we have done.

It means to try to live according to Christ's example and teachings and make right choices in your life using His words as your guide. It's hard to do consistantly--so we need His grace and forgiveness. Quite often --in my experience anyway.
