Religion doesn't necessarily directly cause violence; but indirectly it does, because it draws a line in the sand so to speak. Which does cause violence, and as with anything else two opposing forces vying for preservation of their views or beliefs creates conflict.

The problem is not religion itself, but whether it's a monotheistic or polytheistic religion. Every single monotheistic religion claims that their god is the Only True God. Such thing leads to wars, violence and hatred.
This didn't and doesn't happen to polytheistic religions since they respect others' beliefs (they worship many gods).
*****TAKE A LOOK AT HISTORY****
Greek pagans never fought. They invented medicine, democracy and morals.
Roman pagans never fought for religious reasons. They fought for POLITICAL REASONS.
Celt pagans never fought. They invented good music and arts.
Ancient Arabs (before Islam appeared) believed in many gods. They invented Algebra and the numerals we use today.
Ancient Chinese never fought. They invented morals and a harmonious society.
Pagan societies have been way more tolerant through out history. Maybe that gives you the answer you are looking for.

Religion is dogma. The implementaion and understanding of dogma is up to the intelligence and emotional maturity of the practioner. If the practitioner is bigotted, ignorant, or lacks reasoning, the result is a dislike rather than a love for those who are different and this unfortunately leads to violence (to kill what one does not understand) intolerance (to deny what one does not understand) and hate (that which cannot be loved). It is not the religion. It is the ignorance of those that follow the religion.

Religion does not cause violence, but greed and bigotry cause violence. Look at any conflict and you will definitely find an underlying economic or racial motive. Poor old religion just gets used by both sides to justify their actions to the ignorant public.

If one really looks at it from a distance one can see that it is a competition.....which religous practice is right(one is the rest is wrong, so they think(man or religious leaders of that group) so the rest must convert. The more that convert to one religion the more money in the church coffers. Hasn't money always been the trouble.?

Religion only guides people toward rules and regulations that no one can keep. Love of Father God through Jesus Christ is what guides people toward goodness and lives of peace.

There are too many religions..they clash with their idols & beliefs.
There is only 1 God and unless EVERYONE figures that out we will continue to have our differences.
