There are wines that can go into the thousands per bottle, particularly old and stellar vintages.

Romanee-Conti, considered the best burgundy in the world routinely sells for above $1,000 a bottle.

There are also a number of world class Bordeauxs that can reach that price range as well.

My favorite Bordeaux, one that many wine experts also consider the best of the best is Chateau Latour. Recent vintages run anywhere from $200 - $1,000 a bottle.

The most expensive I tried was the 1975 Latour for $400 at a restaurant in San Francisco where my wife and I celebrated our engagement.

Are these wines actually worth that much money? Probably not but they are exquisite and incomparable to the everyday stuff most people drink. Of course developing a palate for them plays a role as well.

Canadian ice wine - it's about $80/bottle. Not much to a politician I know, but then again I'm not a politician. :)

I'm somewhat limited in my exposure living in Mississippi, but there's a restaurant with a premier cru Bordeaux in a good year I lust after but will not drink listed at $1500. Food's good, too.
