Uttering a forged instrument

this would only be a crime if the friend said that the guy didn't have permission to use his check/money from his account. in this case, it would probably be theft since he's ultimately misappropriating money -- it's not illegal though to just pay with another person's check (the apartment could care less whose name is on the check)

uttering a forged document if your friend wrote the check out himself and depending on the amount and laws in your state it could be either petty theft or grand theft. if he had permission than it is all a misunderstanding and your friend can prove that.

if he was arrested. Call down to the jail and THEY will tell you exactly what the charge(s) is (are).

At court they will also add STUPIDITY to those charges.
HOW in the hell did he NOT think he was going to get caught?

My best guess would be theft, since it has to be presumed he did not acquire the check by asking for it.
