Usually a fine. Typically varies between $50 - $100 in most states. If the cop thinks that your car is unsafe, it could get towed.

As others have said, you would receive a citation, pay a fine, be required to have your vehicle inspected, and in some states your vehicle would be impounded until the inspection was performed.
The idea behind state mandated vehicle inspections is to make sure that the car you drive is safe, to protect both you and also those you would pass on the highway. Isn't your safety worth the few dollars that that inspection costs?.

Here in Nevada can mean immediate towing of the car and a fine up to $1k. You get car back after paying fine and towing charge. Then within a given time frame to get inspected and return to court with the proof.

a very expensive fine/ticket... maybe even jail time... not sure about the laws in Maine... but since 2007 already started.. every car should have the new color... meaning it's very likely they will recognize an outdated sticker...

If your car appears to be in good shape, you'll probably be given a warning, like I was.

I should add that I live in Maine, too.
