You ear doesn't really swell shut, the inner ear fills with fluid and it feels like it, though. The lump is probably a lymph node, which is part of your immune system. It is enlarged as part of the fight against the infection you currently have. To make yourself a little more comfortable, use a heating pad on the side of your face where it hurts, to cover the ear and down along to the underside of the jaw and throat. Lying on the infected ear will also help relieve the pain as well. You can also take Tylenol and Ibuprophen (Motrin) for discomfort. Keep away from drafts and if you go out, wear something to cover the ears and keep them warm. Move your jaw around as much as you can, and keep your nose clear by blowing it gently. That helps clear the ears drainage system, the eustachian tube, and encourages the fluid to clear out. It doesn't take much movement, so if it hurts don't get too radical with it. Drink warm liquids as opposed to cold, and eat softer foods that don't require much chew power. Otherwise, with antibiotics an ear infection usually improves by the 3 or 4th day.

If you're not allergic to NSAIDs like Ibuprofen (Advil), you can take a couple of those tonight so you can sleep. You might get a little relief by holding a warm cloth, heating pad or heated buckwheat pillow on your ear/jaw area. That may help the circulation and help that enlarged lymph node drain. The lymph node is enlarged because of the infection....it's doing its job, but it can painful!
You may need to call your doc in the morning and ask for something for pain. Also ask the doc if he suggests anything like a decongestant. Try laying with the infected ear up (on the opposite side). I'm sure you're very miserable. As someone else said, even if your ear starts feeling better, take every single antibiotic pill you've been subscribed; don't stop taking them early.

That sounds really painful. Have you been to the DR yet? If so... did he not give you anything for pain? If not, I would call a pharmacist (like Walgreens) and ask them what you could do for the pain.

I had ear infections all the time, and they never git that bad. You should get off the computer and get to a hospital quick. I'm not a doctor, but if this gets any worse you could lose your hearing.
