21 December 2012 is the date when, according to the Mayan Calendar, the world will end. The winter solstice sun will, at noon, align directly across what is called the "dark rift" in the Milky Way galaxy- an apparant hole right on the Galactic Equator (in the center of the scattering of stars that give our galaxy it's name). This only happens every 25,800 years. To the Maya, this rift was considered the road to the underworld, and their calendar ends at this astronomical event.

I would imagine that somewhere, you've come across a conspiracy theorist--amateur or otherwise--who made the connection between the dangers of global warming and the Mayan belief of our world's imminent demise.
