Cats can handle it. Unless he is limping or walking funny then he is fine. You will know if he is REALLY hurt.

There's no definite answer as to why cats purr, but one theory is that one of the reasons they purr is to relieve stress and reduce pain. It's also possible that you just scared him and he's purring to comfort himself. If you feel you stepped on him hard enough to do some real damage you may want to take him to a vet for an examination. I'd wait until tomorrow morning and see how he is behaving. If he's not acting any differently than usual, I'd say he's fine and was just scared. If he's acting a little reclusive or showing some sign of injury, I'd see a vet.

i really dont' think you need to rush him to the vet. If you stepped on him hard enough to hurt him, you'd know - he would be limping, or crying, or doing anything but curled up in a nice ball sleeping. He's probably fine - just keep an eye on 'im - if anything seems weird then take him in to the vet if you're worried. As for the purring. It has been thought that cats will purr when they are feeling a heightened emotion(ie/happiness is the usual one) - but fear or anger could be one too. We used to have wild cats that lived in our barn, and the kittens would always be purring away as they hissed and spit at us. ...it was so sweet... lol

It happens... My kitten ALWAYS gets under my feet, needless to say, he's been half-stepped on or almost stepped on by me and my boyfriend. Don't beat yourself up.
He got scared and thats why he hid. You must have eased up quick, since he was able to get away fast, so I wouldn't worry.
Watch him when he wakes; he will probably sleep a little more than usual because of his experience - i'll bet it tired him out being all nervous. As long as hes not overly licking (you should know his habits, my cat tends to drench himself when he cleans, heh) or walking with his paw lifted or anything like that, then he's fine.
If he seems like hes acting funny after a few days of observation, take him in. Really, cats are sweet lazy mushes, but they're like slinkys and can bend and move and fall 100000 times before it actually hurts them.
He'll be okay!

You should have your cat seen by a veterinarian. Cats do not exhibit pain as dogs to and tend to hide injuries. Your cat could be severely injured.
Some injuries due to crushing of the abdomen or thorax include broken ribs which can make breathing difficult, pulmonary contusions, pneumothorax or hemothorax, diaphragmatic hernia, liver avulsion, gall badder avulsion/rupture, splenic avulsion, kidney avulsion all of which can cause internal bleeding.
The only way to know if you cat is injured is to have a veterinarian examine him. They may want to take radiographs, run some blood tests or keep him for observation.
You may not think anything is wrong from the outside, but there could be something seriously wrong on the inside.

I accidentally kicked my cat sooooooo hard in the midsection because he blends in perfectly with the rug. He seemed to be ok for a day and then seemed to be very sensitive around his back for a few days. I took him to the vet and the vet x-rayed and checked him out and said he seemed ok and gave him some pain meds and antibiotics (just in case it was something else). He said cats are very very tough and it takes a lot to injure one by tripping over it or kicking it. Observe him for a couple of days, make him get up and walk. Look for signs of limping or tenderness or crying. Is he eating and drinking? He may not want you to touch him if he is sore. If he seems ok (merely sore) I wouldn't worry about it too much. If he doesn't want to get up or doesn't put any weight on one foot or cries or moans, or doesn't eat or drink, then definitely take him to the vet ASAP for x-rays and a check-up.

I found out when one of my cats fell off a shelf, that purring is not soley a form of affection, it also happens when the cat is injured or shocked in some way. it helps them to heal apparently. See how he behaves in the morning, if he's not right in the morning, see the vet.

If you stepped "hard" any place besides his feet or tail, please take him to a vet tomorrow especially if he's not acting like his usual self! If you stepped on his feet or legs, then he would probably be limping if anything is injured. If not, he's probably fine. If it was the tail-well, they are pretty tough. But, if it was any where else, vital organs could be affected and of course a vet should have a look.

I'm not positive all of this is true but a friend of mine told me that when cats are hurt the start purring. And when they think they might die they hide in a small place.

He's probably okay, just a little ticked off. Get him up and see if he is acting normally- if not, take him to the vet. Cats don't always purr when they are happy- they also do when they are in pain.

I am a VET!! OK when a cat purrs it either mean he is in extreme pain or happy. In this case he is in Extreme pain. I would definitely take him to see a vet like me because if he is that young he might have broken something or fractured something.
