Buddhism offers tools to build self-awareness and connection with the universe. Some elements of the religion are too mystical, such as reincarnation. However, Stephen Batchelor's book "Buddhism without Belief" provides a more western, fully agnostic approach to Buddhist practice. He also has some podcasts that are very helpful.

And yes, I grew up Christian.

Namaste.

Good question, though it could be phrased differently. After all, I'm sure some could get upset by referring to Christianity as "the christain thing." Other than that, good question.

I used to be a Christian, though I have since become a comparative mythologist and have come to see the similar truths and mythologies among nearly all religions. Because of this, I have somewhat of a Buddhistic perspective (although technically I am not a Buddhist). Buddhism is a beautiful system of belief.

EDIT: Goodness. I finish answering your question, then see that some people have *big* misconceptions about Buddhism. Namely, what does Buddhism have to do with idols? Even a little research would help with dispelling such ideas.

lol! Dude if you're having doubts about Jesus and seeking for another religion or the truth it just doesn't exist! See how many religions are out there... its crazy... some people have faith but certainly some religion were formed as a form of Government when there wasn't one to control and help others in any particular society... so religions aren't that bad.

as to what's the best one or the right one maybe only one will know when we die... if not who knows what will happen... some day we will find out we will be illuminated I hope... I am sure there's a big library about it so when I die that's where I'll go. Until then just live a nice life have fun, enjoy, follow the law, and most importantly RESPECT EVERYONE's religious beliefs.

I live in total peace with Jesus, muhammad, Allah, God, the several Indian Gods, Buddah... EVERYONE I even pray to the Greek Gods, without forgetting the Romans and the Vikings... perhaps the real Gods are from some tribe in the Caribbean! Who knows... there's no proof and you shouldn't be seeking the truth you can't find... Loki Bless you my friend!

Yes, I did. What do you want to know about Buddhism?

Ehhh, already with the idol stuff. People really need to read up before they go around spouting hatred, they just end up looking foolish...

You asked to be enlightened, and the only person who can do that is you. The tools that you need to be enlightened include knowledge of the Dhamma. Not being aware of your current position, I was just seeing if you did not know about the Dhamma. You did not specify whether you were a practicing Buddhist or a just an interested person. I apologize if I offended you in any way...

I will attempt to enlighten you.

All belief systems are inherently suspect solely because they rely on beliefs. If this does not make sense to you, look up the meaning of the word belief. While Buddhism may hold many worthy ideals, it is still based on unjustifiable beliefs which have no place in rational thought.

It is possible to have a sensible psychology, self reliance, and a strong moral system without having any beliefs or needing any religion.

You can create a strong moral system with logic and reason. Simply judge an act based on it's consequences to all involved parties.

I think christianity is awesomeness. I am christian, and I practice christian ways, yet I really respect buddhism and pretty much all other religions. The dali lama is pretty cool. Have you read his instructions for life? I actually printed those out and pasted them to the wall. Some good stuff to read as often as possible. Have a good day my brothers and sisters! ha jk!

thoughful? yes it was thoughful for Bhudda to abandon his wife and child on the night it was born. Historically that is true. Absentee fatherism makes great religion. And how was the psychological beneficial for a parental reliant child to grow up knowing his father considered him nothing more than a material object. good basis for a religion. and then again if according to Bhuddism, if there really may not be a reality, then maybe the reality of the religion is false. At least Christianity believes in the Absolute God of Absolute Truth and a Savior who says He would never leave us nor forsake us. Why believe in something that even questions the validity of itself?

Congratulations on being a Buddhist, want a cookie? While I would agree with you that Christianity, Judaisim and Islam have many flaws, I think this question is just being argumentative. And just to let you know, its not like Buddhists are complete pasaifists, they're nations do have armies.

I don't see anything wrong with meditation, relaxation and such. The only problem is that Buddhists don't have a savior. That's a big difference.
