Tropical Vacation theme.
Think Hawaii. Blues, Greens, Tropical flowers.

Think of your favorite place that you like to be and make your new room a "retreat sap-room" that you would enjoy!
If you LOVE it, then everyone else will too!

Besides, YOU will be the ONE who spends the most time in that room straightening it up to get ready for guest.
*So, do what you love, and love what you do!

Go Safari? Animal prints
Beach-- Sailing, Fishing
Sports Fan room?

The best guest rooms I've stayed in have nice white comfy down pillows and comforters, lots of fun travel magazines, and books of origins unkown to me.
A cd player with headphones, and meditation cd's, tropical music, and a collectoin of classic rock!
OH- and a good reading light, a candle, or night light, and luxery towells for the bath.
(I also appreciated the fact that in the closet was an old bedspread, cuz i had a dog, and put that over the bed when he was in the room-- White is nice, but as a guest, you want to be comfortable too!)

Just make it fun for you
Relaxing for you
Something you would want to have if you were a guest.

Now-- go do your own room first!!!! (smiles)

I have a few beach themes in my house. I used stuff that we found on the beach. We filled a clear glass jar with shells and sea glass; we bought a couple of starfish (already dead) from a nearby fish and tackle shop and I screwed them onto cabinet doors from the inside. You could also go to flickr and print out some photos of beach scenes, frame them and hang them. We found a mirror with a frame that was painted to reflect the sea. I also saw one that had a frame made of driftwood, but it was too big for our use. If you have a little more money to spend, you can get a border that goes all around the room just under the ceiling. I've seen these with sea horses, others with sand and beach umbrellas, and others with beach chairs, all repeated in a continuous line. This is hung like wallpaper and might require some help from others. I hope these ideas help. Good luck with your project.

I did mine in soft colors, beige, pale greens, blues, yellows. For pictures they are all calming scenes, like one is a garden with a pond and foot bridge. All my company love it, they say they find it very soothing. I have had 2 different guests actually went to bed, then came out and asked for a book to read. I keep an alarm clock, flashlight, bedside light, kleenex, and also a little basket that I fill up with a new bath sponge, bath salts, etc. I also have a phone in there but I keep the ringer turned off. I also will put clean towels on the dresser for them. Hope this gives you some help.

In a guest bedroom I never use a theme. Why? Because your taste isn't the same as your guests, and assuming you want them to feel comfortable keep it neutral. I always paint the room white and use blues and yellows as accent color. For example here I use Fontana by Broyhill furniture in Honey Pine Stain. I have painted the walls, and ceiling white. Hung white lace curtains. On the bed I found a quilt that has navy blue and yellow with white on it. On the end tables I use clear glass lamps with yellow shades. The only piece of furniture besides the endtables, bed and dresser is a rocker. It is pine witha wlhite wash to it. The back and seat pillow is navy, I have used a yellow throw on the edge of it.

I think cool or neutral colors are best for guest rooms. As far as a theme, it'd be easiest to look where ever you buy your bed set and find one you like the most!

I go with neutral light colors. Green, blue, purple, gold colors. I like diamond patterns but spaced out not crowded. Or a nice dolphin/sealife/beach theme.

Not dark because dark is depressing. The red people use is too ughly for me.

House paint offers an enormous variety of colors, texture and pattern. It all depends on your style. Find out how they look both in daylight and at night.

Personally, I love the deep chocolate, golds, yellows and reds. Make it look like a Tuscan escape. :)
