I made a wish this year - not a resolution, but just a wish. I asked god if he could find me a wife.
The problem is, I'm unsure what a wife or a potential wife would want from me. I'm 45, a little overweight, a recovering alcoholic and have had lots of girlfriends in my life. I wanted to marry the last one, but I screwed it all up by drinking and cheating on her. I never want to go back there again.
I've never been married before, and find alot of women are looking for a second or third husband and think that there is something wrong with me.
I did start a multi-million dollar software company, which failed in 2003, but I'm trying again. (I started it in 1987 when i got sober the first time)
What do you think is wrong with this picture. Do you think I'd never find a wife? That's what I want most from life.
What can I do to make myself attractive enough so that some woman that I'm equally attracted to will marry me?

Sounds like you should quit sitting around and waiting for "God" to drop a beautiful, intelligent woman out of the sky and set about looking for one.
Because, as you've surely heard, "God helps those who help themselves."

Bill, Hang in there, it can happen.
First of all, I want you to know that for every Christian man that is looking for a wife, there are several women who attend church and are looking for a husband.
From a woman's perspective, here are some things that will help you to attract the right woman.
1) Be a positive person.
2) Make sure that you walk in integrity. It's okay if mistakes are in your past, but make sure that your deeds reflect a person of good character.
3) Put aside all bad habits and get counseling or whatever you need to do to overcome those issues.
4)No more cheating on the woman!!! Word gets around on this issue.
5) When you do get a woman, make sure you let her know regularly how important she is to you (not just with flowery words but in your actions). If a woman feels like she is your queen, she will make you her King.
6) Where are you looking for a wife? Your best avenue is to get involved in a church, get to know the people there. As you develop relationships with people in the church, and they see that you are a person of character, the born matchmakers will come out. Us churchgoing women who are married, love to have others in a happy relationship. But the key here is a HAPPY relationship.
7) Most importantly, make sure that your walk with God is a committed one to Him. If you do this, not just to get a wife, but to develop a relationship with God where He is #1 in your life, I have this feeling that he will answer your prayer.
8) Are you willing to put her needs above your own? That is when you will meet Ms. Right.

Maybe your asking the wrong question. Maybe you should be asking that God first fill you with His Spirit and use you in His service; to empower you to fight the addiction of alcohol. Yes, by all means, keep praying for a wife. But you also have to pray for a godly woman who will accept you for who you are and who will support you. Never mind what a potential wife wants from you. What do you truly want from a potential wife? The best place to meet a godly wife is in a Bible believing, Bible teaching, Holy Spirit filled church. Just don't try too hard all the time because that's how mistakes are made. Let things happen naturally. Ask the Lord to guide you to the woman He has chosen for you, the woman with whom you will spend the rest of your life. But your first priority must be God and your relationship with Him through Jesus Christ. God bless, my friend

maybe god is holding you back because He wants you to be with the perfect person.
either way, do what you want. if you want to get married, get married. your drinking is the past.. try and stop drinking completely and rebuild your life. if that special someone comes in ur life who you think you could marry, propose to her. if not, then i guess marriage just isn't for you. which hey, is totally fine.
as for weight.. who cares how much you weigh! if someone truly loves you they won't care.
good luck and god bless.

First of all you could try looking like Johnny Depp........
just kidding
Okay, I heard the word "I" a lot in your description. It may have just been what you felt you needed to say, but just try to judge for yourself to see if you are a bit selfish. Maybe you're not.
Be confident but not conceited.
Also, women love a good sense of humor

Don't presume to know what God is thinking. Be honest, and enjoy your life for what you have. Once you are happy without a wife, you will be ready to marry.

Repent of the past sins of your life. Trust and desire God more than anything(including a happy marriage)...petition God for the needs and desires of your heart...then wait...He is not deaf..timing is sometimes the key.
ps I will offer up a prayer for you in reguards to this.

I think your problem is assuming you that deserve a wife from God. Surely you foolish mortals are aware that the realm of love is ruled by Aphrodite alone!
