Well, SED displays have yet to come out....but they're planning on selling them by July 2007....but they've been pushing the Dateline back since 2005....the main reason being the cost of Plasma is pretty low now....

An SED display acts pretty much like a Plasma....behind each pixel is a miniature picture tube that turns on the pixel. A plasma works the same way....

The difference is that SED supposedly will convert their "picture tube" from old style vacuum tube and over to a newer, more efficient Solid state -Semiconductor setup....this will reduce power consumption quite effectively.

So at present the SED technology is "up in the air" because Plasmas have become pretty cheap.

An SED (surface emission display) was supposed to be shown at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) this year, but that has been cancelled. There are apparently some legal problems as well as technical problems remaining. I will be at CES and will try to find out the full story. SED is supposed to provide the advantages of a fixed-pixel display along with the benefits of a CRT (especially, good black levels). I would expect them to be very expensive for a while.
