Since Monday, I have been on the weight loss kick..trying to lose the baby weight. Anyhow, I have been burning 500 calories a day on the stationary and eating 800 calories. I weighed 137 to start and now am 141. I tried drinking tons of water today in case I was dehydrated/fluid retention. Well, what gives? I dont suspect it is metabolism slowing down because exercise counteracts "starvation mode." Or...I would assume exercise would. Anyhow, why am I gaining? Simple fluid shift?

With as few calories as you are eating and as many calories as you are burning your metabolism has most likely come to almost a complete standstill. Also keep in mind as you are exercising that muscle weighs more than fat so if you've put on muscle then that will explain some of it. You really need to talk to a doctor about your diet because you are starving yourself with your diet. You are only keeping 300 cals after exersing and the recommended amount is around 1800cal.

Maybe you are building muscles. They weigh more than fat so as you are losing fat, you gain muscle due to the excercise.

Just a theory. I weigh more after the gym, but that is because I sweat like a pig and am always drinking water. The weight I gain is due to water I drink which is more than I sweat...

Do you weigh yourself in the same condition every time? I weigh myself every morning naked before drinking any water to make sure I weigh the same. When I weight myself at night, I'm usually about 2-3lbs heavier since all the food I ate for lunch & dinner isn't fully digested.

Sometimes when the scales have to measure in that kind of weight range it gets difficult to be accurate. Maybe when you're down to a reasonable and measureable amount it'll be more consistant. Keep at it...

Could be anything but don't rule out the possibility of it being muscle you're building from the exercise.

Measure in inches instead of lbs. Are you losing inches?

well, if you just started your diet, you are not going to see results right away...so ignore the scale for now. but, to answer your question, it sounds like you're retaining water...that's all.
