Fake as in Airsoft, Blank fire only, or real rifle without selective fire? Would suggest an AR-15 style rifle from Armalite (the original manufacturer of "M-16" style rifles), or Rock River Arms as these possess firing chambers designed to handle .223 Remington and 5.56 x 45mm so you can shoot surplus MIL-SPEC ammo and later fire commercial hunting rounds without compromised performance with one or the other.
Bushmaster also makes fine Stoner style rifles, and of course Colt, but your kind of paying for the name with one of those.
T be as close to an authentic M-16A2 you will need a 20" barrel and a 1:7 twist, unfortunately most commercial variants have a 1:9 twist rate so they will not replicate it in that sense, but actually this will be an advantage to you. Selective fire is easily, legally attainable. Look into a trigger actuator to provide you with 3 round burst capability.

Be prepared to spend $800 - $1200 before any optics or modifications, if you want a USMC style rifle you will need an ACOG red-dot scope, although this is for an A4.
DPMS (Panther) actually manufactures good airsoft rifles (or at least the exterior, cost about $100 dollars and have the look, size, weight, and many features of the real rifle (mag release, switch safety, removable handguards, peep-hole sight, and top mounted cocking lever.) Had a friend who owned one, would put a 6mm BB straight through a sheet of drywall at 5 yards.

I'd also like some beachfront property in Arizona. As for the procedure to purchase an M16... 1) Move out of NY 2) Become a resident of another (more firearm-friendly) state 3) Save $15,000 4) Purchase NFA firearm on Form 4

For some of the other disinformation, an M-16 is the military selective fire version of the AR-15, the two use the same receiver but different bolt, trigger and safety components. The difference between 223 Remington and 5.56x45 NATO is very very small. Yes, there's a difference, but I have fired thousands and thousands of rounds through a selection of mil-spec and commercial uppers chambered for both with absolutely zero sign of trouble. Fine, there's a difference, but the safety margins are vastly greater than that difference, it's like the audiophiles arguing that they can hear the difference when their speaker cables aren't routed just so.
I'd agree that the AR sucks, I have four and they are just what is easily available here, they are NOT a good design, they are a typical example of the commercial sector palming off something on an impressionable military. The boys at the pointy end did not choose this toy, it may be convenient but it fills up with crud and the receiver gets unnecesarily hot when it is fired, the gas mechanisms on the FAL and AK are vastly better.

If you search around on the net you can find a vintage M16 or even an M16 A2 rifle. I think they SUCK! Was in the army and the Blasted things jammed all of the time. The M16A2, the M203 and the SAW, all of the jammed. They make better show pieces than firing tools

the M16 was replaced with the more reliable ar-15 many years ago. The fake ones are in toy stores you MIGHT get lucky and find one in a surplus store or a flea market but then your gun will have to be registered. But with the govt rules on automatic weapons it is very unlikely you'll find one.

I'm not even going to ask what you're planning on doing with it. I'm just going to say that whatever it is, it's probably not a good idea.
