I'm glad someone finally asked that question....As accumulated human knowledge has increased, so to has the need for people with religious tendencies to increase their level of denial in order to maintain their faith. Two hundred years ago when atheism was almost unheard of, religion had an unchallenged hold over society’s general preconceptions regarding everything that at that time inexplicable. Of course, it’s no coincidence that two hundred years ago, virtually nothing was known about electricity, microbiology, the universe, indeed, knowledge that even the most insignificant of us take for granted today would have incredibly shocked the most knowledgeable scientists of the time.

That which was inexplicable was simply, “Gods will.” Lightning, weather, the stars in the sky, the seasons, the tides, the reason some people became ill and died whilst others lived, everything was “Gods will.” Now, science can answer all those questions and continues to answer more questions and will keep on answering questions that have even yet to be asked.

As for accepting homo's....you'll just have to keep hoping for that one

Your example lacks quite a bit of historical and cultural contrary evidence. In Ireland, for quite some time, there were women in the priesthood. Many examples of very important women are included in the Bible that are anything but peripheral. Even today, there are a great many important women in the Church, and few would doubt that Mother Theresa had just as much impact or value as most any priest.

Women in many Christian denominations today are pastors. Women throughout time have had some impact on Christianity, and will continue to do so.

That said, women have had a harder time of it than men. Women were much less valued, and their monthly cycles had them considered unclean.

In Christianity, it is doubtful that gay men will ever be universally seen as accepted; the Biblical prohibition seems just too strong. Still, there are strides in many churches; the UCC and Episcopal churches being notable. Homosexuals have also created thier own denomination, the Metropolitan Community Chruch, which exists in a number of cities.

I think though, that the more fundamentalist churches will always stand against homosexuality.

It certainly does change over time, though how it can ever accept homosexuality i am not sure. There are sections of Christianty that do accept it, like the Episcopal church in the USA which ordains gay bishops, but they must have a very loose interpretation of the Bible, because the Bible is very clear that sex should only be within marriage, and marriage involves someone of the same species but opposite sex. The Bible specifically forbids sex between people of the same sex. I don't see how anyone who reads the Bible can come to the conclusion that actually, it says tha homosexuality is ok.

Women in the Bible are not as perepheral as you think, they may be by modern standards, but remember that the bible was written in a very male dominated culture. In that context it is actually quite significant how much prominence it gives to women. There are two entire books of the Bible that are stories mainly about women (Ruth, Esther), and women play an important role in many other Bible stories.

The Bible gives much importance to women, and never mentions being a woman as anything degrading, hateful or sinful. 100 years ago, people didnt respect women out of their own ignorance... even non christians. Now, the Bible DOES say that homosexuality is a sin, so if Christians accept it, now or 100 years from now, it again, is out of ignorance.

Im not a gay basher, I know there are many many good hearted nice homosexuals out there, my best friend is one. But that doesnt mean I have to accept their sin as "ok" . I care for and respect him more than most people I know and would take a bullet for him, but that doesnt mean I have to accept what I believe is sin.

yes, I think so. I think Christianity evolving is one reason we have so many different denominations. There are many Christians already do believe homosexuality is not a sin (although in my experience, those who do not are by far outnumbered by those who do). As people become more educated about what the BIble really says and means (ie, the verses that supposedly say it is a sin to marry a person of another race that don't mean that at all), then their ideas change. A lot of our understanding about the Bible has been politicially motivated by the early church. They thought it best to keep people ignorant so they could have more control. (I'm talking hundreds of years ago here, and the selling of indulgences by the Catholic church among others for example). Those who say we don't and won't change are naive, as there are MANY "christian" practices we have abandoned. (Justifying slavery, "excommunicating" people, burning witches at the stake, to name a few. More recently, we accept all kinds of shows on television that were a 19th century Christian to see, he would be outraged.) Bill Gothard (whom I can't stand, but is right on this point if you think about it) says that Christian culture is about 20 years behind secular culture.

As we break from that control and realize the fallability of previously held traditions, we modify our beliefs.

I take it you have never read the Bible. Women peripheral??? What are you talking about?? Have you ever heard of Eve who started the whole thing called sin? Just exactly how is Eve peripheral???

The Bible: Open it. Read it. Get a clue.

And the Episcopalians and other religions are accepting homos in complete and total contradiction of the Bible.

Where have you been? Some Christian churches are already supporting homosexuality. The love of many is growing cold and people are forsaking their religion and supplanting it with wickedness and weakness.

Of course it's possible. Times change and belief systems have to addapt the the surroundings just like everything else. Unless of course you're Amish--they separate themselves from the rest of the world in order to keep their beleifs the same. Hopefully, in 100 years, people (including Christians) will have "forgotten" that there was ever a time when biggotry was commonplace.

There is nothing like "Christian religion." Its either or, but if put together, it is mans attempt to politicise Christianity. But to answer your question, Religion evolves. Christianity does not. Your instances are simply the weaknesses of humanity and religion. Christianity remains the same.

Of course it does. Modern Chrsitianity scarcely resembles its early days, and dogmas change and go in and out of favor like fashion. In a hundred years...who knows?

But there will always be those who will act as though we were in the Dark Ages.
