Politics and economics. Before anybody knew how bad smoking was, the whole economies of several states grew up around tobacco--Kentucky, Virginia, etc. Millions of peoples jobs and billions of dollars in corporate assets are tied up in the industry. There is a lot of political resistance in whole regions of the country to banning tobacco. Even tho its a bad, a dangerous, a poisonous product, I don't think it should be illegal--this is supposed to be a free country and that means people are free to make mistakes so long as it doesn't directly harm others. Anti smoking advocates say smoking does hurt tax payers and the relatives of the deceased, thats true, but this is not a problem that can be solved overnight, it will take time. I think slow pressure and public education are best in eliminating the addiction. The US also earns a sizable amount of foreign exchange selling these poisonous, addictive drugs on the international market, much like Britain sold opium in China in the 19th century. Hopefully, time will change all of this. Don't smoke, try to discourage any of your friends from smoking, or encourage them to quit if they already smoke.

Driving kills people, but they still allow people to drive.
Wars kill people, but the government maintains an army.
Police kill people, but they deserve it more often than not (not always, but more often than not)
Fact of the matter is that a lot of things that the government is involved in end up with someone dead. Not everything can be or should be the subject of a law.
As someone who knew what he was getting into when he started smoking, and now is quit, I'll say that making it illegal is wrong. It would encourage it more than it would discourage it. It would be disastrous. The same way that making alcohol illegal in the 20's was disastrous. It'd contribute to the growth of organized crime.
Also, the government wouldn't have a deep-pocketed cash cow that it could sue every few years, and your taxes would go up. :P

Good question. The tobacco industry has had their hand in Uncle Sam's pocket since he had one. It's odd that even alcohol was prohibited once, but tobacco, unlike any other drug, has remained legal. Of course smokers would tell you that it's a free country and they have the right to take that risk. But, when it comes to pot, etc. then Americans have no such right. Personally, I think it should be banned totally. Smoking takes a huge chunk out of the health care dollar.

smoking indeed is a very dangerous habit but to make people stop isn't easy either That decesion lies mostly by individuals themselves. If the tobacco companies were burnt then we we could say that smoking is illegal. But becouse they are in bussines it is for them to make money and foget about the health of the people

I'm opposed to smoking completly so please don't think i'm not.
Number one its the money.
Number two to many people smoke to actually ban smoking, they would and do oppose this because it is a violation of thier civil liberties.
And finally my personal favorite supporting idea, we tried to outlaw an addictive product many years ago. Some of you might know this one as "alchol". needless to say...that didn't work out very well.
