i have a map and umbrella that are too long to fit inside any bags i have. so, how can i bring on board the plane?
I dont want the umbrella and map to go as checked baggage because they can easily get destroyed

The rolled up map won't be problem - just carry it in your hand as you board the plane. It won't count as a carryon item. You might be able to get away with the umbrella the same way, but in this age of heightened security it's also possible that you won't be allowed to carry it on. When in doubt ship it. Or buy one on the other end of the flight.

I often have this problem when traveling with presentation materials. I will enclose the flat pieces between two pieces of cardboard with stiff plastic rods around the edges, then either ship it or check it. FedEx seems to be easier on the goods than the airlines.

you should easily be able to carry them on board. Make sure you put the map in something protective or else it will get ruined in the over head compartment

You could probably check them safely (or carry them on) if you pack them inside a piece of PVC tube. You should be able to get the tube and a couple of end caps pretty cheaply at Home Depot.
