Depends on your taste, really, but if it's a big party, a well stocked bar would include red and white wine (blush wine as well if you want), one or two kinds of beer, the basic liquors (vodka, gin, bourbon, scotch, vermouth) mixers, (orange juice, sodas, tonic, club soda, other juices) and maybe a liqueur or two like Kahluah or Irish Cream. Plus garnishes, like olives, cherries, lemon, lime, and orange slices.

For a smaller or less expensive gathering, do the beers, and one or two good mixed drinks. Vodka and cranberry juice with a lime twist is always good, and so is a big bowl of punch. Champagne, orange juice, and ginger ale is pretty good, use cheap booze, no need to waste the good stuff on a punch.

Is it a themed party? Any particular liquor you want to work with? A good party drink that is sure to impress is an original daiquiri. This isn't the stupid overly sweet slushy mess you get at TGI Friday's, but a fresh tasting, rather strong rum cocktail. Hemmingway used to suck 'em down by the boatload if you don't think they're manly enough.

Chill a martini glass with ice and water. Have it set aside while you mix the cocktail.

Put 2 cups crushed ice in a shaker. Add to the shaker 2 oz light rum (not captain or 151, the clear bacardi stuff), 1 oz fresh squeezed lime juice (yes, it matters, do your prep ahead of time) and 1/2 oz simple syrup.

Shake it together, toss the ice and water out of your now chilly martini glass, strain and pour. (you are pouring off just the chilly liquid, the ice stays out of the drink, and in the shaker)
