do universal remotes work on portable dvd players?

i have a mustek mp72 and i don't have the remote. i'm thinking if it's better to buy one, or get a universal. but i don't know if/how?

It pretty much depends on the portable dvd brand and age but it will most likely work in latest models of sony, toshiba, philips or other known brands.
