I came home from work to find my (indoor house)cat laying on the floor, breathing weird. Later he started foaming at the mouth and shortly there after died. My child said the cat had been that way for a few hours, but was unable to reach me at work. What could have happened to my cat? I have other cats in the house and do not want the same thing to happen to them. Please help! Thank you!

What type of household chemicals or poisons could the cat gotten into that may have caused this? This is strictly an indoor cat so rabies I feel is out of the question. The cat acted fine this morning, but something definately happened while I was away. I'm trying to figure out what may have had that fast of an effect like that. Thank you all so far for your replies.

John j... sorry for not wording my question correctly.. yes it should've said what happened to my cat perhaps.... I am a little upset about him dying suddenly is all. But thank you everyone for your quick responses. I will search my house for any medications, chemicals, etc. that the cat may have come in contact with.

It may have gotten into something that was poisonous. Maybe a pill had fallen and the cat got a hold of it. Thats really all I can think of. Sorry for your loss.

The thing that is wrong with your cat is that he is dead because no one called the vet when he was sick.
I would deduce from the information you gave that your cat ingested something toxic, although a seizure cannot be completely ruled out. Many house plants are toxic to cats, and many medicines, such as acetaminophen, cannot be metabolized by animals. I'd rule out rabies and distemper because it is mandated that pets be vaccinated against those: UNLESS you are one of those pet owners who never bothered to vaccinate your pets.
Frankly, if my cat was breathing strangely, I would have called a vet immediately. You may have missed the window of opportunity to diagnose and solve the issue. I would still call the vet and ask for assistance in ensuring that nothing toxic is available to the other pets in the house. I also agree with the posting that if the cat ingested a toxic mouse or bug it can die from the toxin.
Clear your house of any cleaning products, plants or medicines including over the counter and herbal meds, vaccum every room well and CALL THE VET! If you haven't vaccinated the pets, do it now- or you can lose all your pets and infect others.
Good luck and sorry about the kitty.

Hello,I am very sorry for the passing of your cat.My cat died a year ago from Kidney damage. Perhaps your cat had an epileptic seizure
which in no way will affect your other cats. There are hundred of web sites on Google about the well being of cats and their illnesses. I have included only one. Blood tests are available for cats at the vets these days.A little expensive. As with humans, a good idea is to watch for the unusual in your cats' behaviors.

It sounds like poisoning of some sort. the exact same thing happened to one of my cats several years ago. There was nothing I could do to save him. He was an outside/inside pet, so he may have eaten a toxic reptile, or a mouse that had already been poisoned. I'm sorry but don't know what to tell you if you didn't take it to Vet for cause of death exam.Try to keep your pets inside if it's possible.

There is nothing wrong with your cat now; he is dead. It sounds as if he got into some kind of poison, though. Rat poison can cause these symptoms.he might have eaten a mouse that had
poison in its system, and make sure your cats cant get to any poison that may be out also ,animals will drink automobile
anti freeze if they get access to it---it has a sweet attractive
flavor and it will kil them quickly

Talk to your veterinarian pronto especially if you have other cats. The only way to be sure is to do a necropsy. Either way, I'd call your vet and keep an eye on your other cats.

She might have had cancer, or something similar. I just recently had to have my oldest cat put down with something similar, and she had not been able to eat or retain food for some days.

Sounds like it could be rhino, or distemper, hard to say for sure though, unless youwilling to pay for an autopsy.

Could it have been a seizure? I had a cat who begun seizing once -- exact same story. He didn't die because we rushed him to the vet ... but he would have.
