Due to the disobedience and malcontentedness of the people, God showed them favor, but He refused to bring the nation into the Promised Land until that first generation had died off. (one generation = 40 years)
The people followed Moses, and Moses followed God's direction for him to follow a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.
So, technically, Moses did not lead the People, God did.
Of the original group that left Egypt, only Caleb and Joshua remained to the Promised Land.

God allowed the Israelites to wander for 40 years until everyone that participated in the acts of worshiping idols which took place while Mosses was on Mount Sinai (receiving God's Law written in stone by His own finger) had died. Also, God led them for this period of time; I think He had a pretty go vantage point from Heaven, don't you, so whatever His reason, He knew what He was doing!

Well God punished them as people said for thier sin and they were therefore "lost" in the wilderness.
If you exaime the different geographical reference points along the journey it appears that they followed the outline of the Sianai pennesila. Therefore, they did not take a direct route. This would have taken them many years. Plus, there is a good chance there were millions of people with him. WOZERS! That is a major migration.

They weren't smart. The Israelites were very disobedient, and so God made them travel for forty years, until every last father at that time had died. This way, only the children, the true chosen people of God, were left to live in the promised land.

it should have taken them abotu that long but youre forgetting- the Jews sent spys ahead to Israle to see how the land looked and the type of people that lived there. All but two of the spys said israel was a horribel place filled with evil ginats- and the Jews believed them. So they all got panicked and didnt want to go. So then god punished them by makign them wander in the desert for 40 years. Also, the Jews had jsut finished beign slaves, by wanderign aroudn for 40 yuears they woudl lsoe the demeanor of slaves and become a confident nation that could defeat all of the inhabitnats already in israel

The phrases in the Bible which come into English as 'for forty days' or 'for forty years' are a mistranslation from the Greek version of the old testement. Maybe it translates differently from Hebrew, I'm not sure. The phrase just means 'for a long time'.

they got there relatively quickly alright, but along the way, they fell back to idol worship. After that, God didn't allow any of the adults to enter the Promised Land. As a result, it was 40 years before anyone could go in. (Abraham was granted a view of the P.L. before he died.) They couldn't really send just children in all alone. Eventually, Joshua led them in. He was 12 at the time of the idolatry, and not considered at fault.

Took god that long to figure out where in the entire area he could stick them where there wasn't a drop of oil under it. Had to wait thousands of years for the punch line , but he wasn't doing anything else.
