She should definitely keep the bite area clean! Use some antibacterial ointment on a regular basis. But the bite isn't too dangerous, unless she developes an unmanageable infection, which she should see the dr.

As far as the biting...this isn't a good thing! Just because the dog bit her, doesn't mean it's dangerous. She probably hurt the dog without meaning to while pulling it out from under the bed. She needs to be instructed not to pull it from the legs. Even well-mannered family pets can bite when they feel threatened or are hurt. However, now that the dog has bitten someone, he/she needs to be trained not to bite! It'll be easier for the dog to bite someone, as it has now breached that line.

Something I always teach my dogs (young and old) is "head down". This can be easily taught by first determining WHEN the command will be needed. Then you tell the dog "head down", while (as it is laying down) holding his/her head down. Each time it lifts it's head, repeat the process. Don't beat the dog! Repetition is a great teacher, and this has saved me from being snapped at, while brushing (older dogs can have sore hips) or clipping nails.

It's never safe to be bitten by a dog, or any animal for that matter.
An open wound caused by a bite can have a high risk of bacterial infection which may be difficult to clean adequately. If the wound is only a scratch then cleaning and disinfecting with peroxide or other antibacterial cleaner may be adequate. If it's a deep wound or puncture then it is advisable to seek medical care.
Severe swelling and redness are signs of a major infection. You may want to get to the ER if that happens.
Good luck with that.

Your friend needs to get the vaccination. I don't think you can file criminal charges. I doubt that they knew that it was going to get rabies. Regardless of what the health department says, she needs to go to a doctor and tell them she was exposed to rabies. They will give her the shots. edit: the first poster does not know much about rabies. If you start to develop symptoms, it's already too late for you. You have to get the shots before symptoms start. Rabies has a 100% fatality rate. good to know, I didn't know about laws about vaccination. I've never had a dog.

Probably safe from rabies, but clean and disinfect the wounds.

Poor dog was probably scared to death. Next time, try luring the dog out with a treat or toy. Pulling on a scared dog will only increase the fear.

Yes, its safe. If your dog is up to date, she should be fine. Neosporin gets rid of the germs and keeps it clean. Put that on there and some bandages if its really bad. She should be fine.

Infection can happen, but not rabies. Don't worry about it unless it starts pussing and stuff, and neosporin is a good idea.

Relax, if up to date on shots, no worries from that end. Just clean the wound well with antibacterial soap, and keep it dressed.
