This is what worked for us:
Step 1 - Begin only using it for sleep time. Do not give it any other time. When this new pattern is established go on to step 2.
Step 2 - Introduce a new lovey (some kind of stuffed animal or doll) for them to start going to sleep with. When this new pattern is established go on to step 3
Step 3 - Cold Turkey. Throw away every soother in the house. Sounds harsh, but soother's are too much of a crutch for the parent's too!
My son only cried for two nights. Then it was over. Never asked for it again, and went to sleep on his own.
Good Luck!

What a pain in the butt it is to get a soother away. The first time i took my sons away he gridded his teeth so i give it back, so by the time we got it away for good he was3 he only got it at bedtime. So try slowly take it away and use a reward system or tell your sending it to a baby who needs it or to the mood. LOL there is tons of different things you can use just have to find what works for you and your child.

With my 2 boys I 'bargained' with them. I told them to leave the soother out for Santa to collect and he will leave presents for them instead. You cold use Easter Bunny etc. I think it also helps to cut the teat off the soother just so they know its final. Good Luck.

I started limiting my daughter's pacifier to certain places, like only when falling asleep or in the car when she was about 2.5. Then one day, I cut the tip off of it. If you do that, the pacifier doesn't work anymore. Then we left it out at night for the "pacifier fairy" to take. The fairy left a cool toy instead. I didn't think this would work but it did.
