Insurance Investigators have access to databases that go beyond Carfax and well beyond any publicly available data.

Almost all the insurance companies and all the major insurance companies provide data to NICB - National Insurance Crime Bureau. For competitive reasons, they would not share data with each other that would let competitors see into their business. So they all send the data to NICB - a clearinghouse - and then this data can be accessed by all the insurance companies.

Carfax would be one source that they could check if need be. They'll look into anything related to the claim. If they suspect fraud, the investigation can get pretty deep.
