Walking down Bleecker in the village between 6 and 7 ave, I noticed that street signs sometimes spell the name Bleecker and other times spell it Bleeker. Why is that? what's the correct spelling, and why doesn't the city ensure consistency across all signs?

It is "Bleecker" but I have seen signs like this done wrong.

As a matter of, in the Bronx, there were signs for "Nereid Avenue" that spelled it "Neried". I think they have been corrected since.

Gotta love our city.

I had read an article about this a while ago.

It would not be the first time that some genius did not spell a street name right!

As far as I know, the correct spelling is "Bleecker" - but since you pronounce it "bleee-ker" it seems like it would be correct without the "c."

Someone would have to call and complain for the city to go and change the signs.
