All these answers are correct. The egg shell is just a form of protection that develops (nature is a wonderful and mysterious thing). If the yoke isn't fertilized before the shell completely forms then the bird will lay an unfertile egg.
In addition to the answers provided, go to the two sites below for some very detailed information on the whole process. Very interesting.

The cockatoo must have a boyfriend. Then they do the bird thing. The egg is fertilized inside the mom and a calcium shell forms around it.

well you must have a male to fertilize the egg inside the female then it is fertile, but then she will lay the egg and will have to sit on it for it to hatch just like Rooster's and Hens. A female bird always has eggs. you just have to have a male to fertilize it for it to hatch a baby bird.

Unlike other animals;;
Birds do not have sexual organs.
The have clokulas. ( not sure if that is how it is spelt)
The female and male rub their clokulas together.
Which is what some people refer to as their butt hole.
They have sexual fluids, I guess you could say.
While they are doing the "dance", the fluids mix.
Which begins the egg process.
I own an aviary, where we breed && sell birds.
Umbrella Cockatoo's are my favorite.

the male bird places semen in the female
the semen then fertilizes an egg
which then grows, with yolk and white, and then a hard shell forms
and then she lays an egg
chickens only lay like an egg every week
