I live in a normal town, not like LA or anything. Last week a couple had a dog in a special dog stroller in the mall. Today I saw a lady with a dog at Barnes and Nobles. Is it just me, or is this odd?

I thought the same thing when I saw a girl carrying her little dog through the mall. I do not live in a big city either. I love my dogs, they are part of my family and I would do just about any for my dogs but they do not belong in stores or malls for three main reasons.

1. Taking dogs of any size in shopping areas is not safe for them. They can get stepped on, kicked and tripped over, not to mention their are some really sick people in the world who could potentially give a dog something that would harm them.

2. Dogs are unpredictable. While out in public, the dog could become confused, especially by large crowds or loud noises that could cause them to bite. If this happened, the owners may be required to give their dog up or euthanize them depending on the severity and the laws and regulations. The dog owner could also be sued by the person that was bit.

3. Many people have allergies that could be affected by someone carrying their dog through a mall. While I understand this is not completely avoidable because of seeing eye dogs and other service animals, but having a dog in public for health and disability purposes is completely different than taking a little dog out just because brainless celebrities such as Paris Hilton have made it seem like a fashionable thing to do.

People who do this obviously have no regard for everyone else and therefore should not be out in public themselves.

Nowadays, people enjoy taking their dogs with them every chance they can get, and this doesn't just happen in L.A. It's important for a dog to encounter things for stimulation, rather than letting it stay locked up indoors all day. And the dog's owner loves having their "best friends" with them.
The smaller breeds of dog are sometimes carried in bags designed specifically for carrying little dogs, and lately some people have been using strollers.
But dogs don't get much exercise when they are carried around so it might be best to let them walk most of the time. Unless, of course, they have trouble keeping up, as "teacups" do.

I'm glad you are noticing this. There used to be LAWS that the only pets (dogs) allowed in public places like malls and museums etc were only seeing-eye dogs....Then it expanded to dogs that help other handicapped people....the only dogs allowed in public places were what were termed 'service' dogs.

I don't know if everybody just is ignoring laws or if the laws have changed....maybe they've change along with a thing called the blue laws...... ???

Apparently, upon reseach, it seems it's fine to have pets and dogs in public buildings as long as they don't growl, run loose or cause trouble....

I see nothing wrong with it. People love their dogs and if they are allowed to take them into the stores, then why not. I had a tiny chihuahua pup that I used to take her places in a big purse. I took her to restaurants, grocery stores, etc. No one even knew until she got big enough to stick her head out to see what was going on...lol The reason we carry the tiny ones instead of letting them walk is because there are too many big feet that could step on one and kill it in an instant. When the dogs are home, they walk around just like the big guys.

I have a purse and I take my dog to stores and alot of people I have run into think that is great . Plus it socializes them. it is good for them to be around alot of people that way they know it is not acceptable to bite . I know my chi is a clingy type and he loves being with us and if you leave one of these locked up all day you are going to have an unsocilized dog that will most certainly bite when he encounters a stranger I would not like my dog to react this way to someone. good luck and god bless.

It is not odd. I have a 6 lb 5 month old Bichonpoo she is not tiny but I take her almost everywhere. She is insulted when I have to leave her home. She is my best friend and my constant companion.

Some people should just leave their dogs home!!some small dogs are really ugly and it seams just a waste to spend all of that money on a dog purse if the dog could fit in a paper bag.

I bring my little dog AND my big dog everywhere. I let them walk though. I figure they have feet, so what the hell.

Dogs enjoy going out with their owners. So, why not? Most of us like having a dog at home to be our companion, they love to join us everywhere as well. I like to take my American Cocker out with me and he really loves it!!! I think they need to be sociable and taking them out it is just the best way.
