You should hang it at about eye level wen you are sitting down or however you are going to be viewing your telivision.

just above eye-level from a sitting position-the reason for this people tend to recline while watching movies etc keeping the set in their natural feild of view. although a lot of people tend to do it i would never hang a flatscreen over a fireplace for two reasons 1-because if it is above a fireplace you are limited to where (in height) the tv can go. and 2-when watching the tv while the fire is on the flames can detract you from your viewing. the ideal place would be a dark part of the room or alcove which strangely enough would increase the longevity of your set-in a dark area you would not need to increase the brightness/contrast levels to see the images. so it is worth looking into where the set should go.
