Despite some of the answers listed here, God did not create us out of love or even companionship. To say so would mean that God was not complete in an of Himself. If that is true, He ceases to be God. He doesn't need us. There is nothing that we can add to Him.
Isaiah, as has been noted, writes that we were created for God's glory. That is it...nothing more. God is glorified by creating, sustaining, and redeeming His creation. Some of us have a much higher view of how important we are than we ought.

Not sure. I don't truly know if there is a specifically Biblical explaination, especially since man goofed up. Apparently man was no supposed to learn about Good and Evil, that was a part of God's purpose. Why, is unclear.
We can speculate. The most probably speculation is God wanted to created a race that didn't comprehend Right and Wrong, Good and Evil but had intellegence.
Animals don't have a true concept of good and evil. Neither do little children. It isn't until you yell at them, that they both get wide-eyes and fearful of the Wrath of God.
God wanted an intellegent creature without baseless judgementalism.
It is self evident that Adam and Eve might evntually eat a fruit or veggie that didn't appeal to one or both of them. That is a like or dislike, which is not necessarily a phiosophical concept. It is simply saying "I don't like it" and spitting it out.
They might scowl when seeing that tree and the horrible fruit in the future. Is that a judgement or merely a knee jerk reaction.
A doctor will tell you a true knee jerk reaction is not biased or prejudiced, but merely an autonomic reaction to stimuli.
A reaction to being naked, something no animal ever does, becomes a non-autominic reaction. It becomes a conscious awareness of something that may have no basis in reality.
Being naked is not right or wrong until someone decides to make it that way.
God chose not to make it that way. MAn chose otherwise inadvertenly by breaking the taboo rules.
That ended man's stay in Eden.
Most human mothers would not take things to that much of an extreme for the actions of a child.
So, God must have had a specific purpose in mind and man's actions ended the validity of the purpose. God sent man out to struggle on his own, but provided some guidence and protection for a while.
Our purpose here, today, probably no longer serves anything close to God's original purpose in creating man. But God has left man alone on the world to his own devices.
One day God is going to phsyically check up on us when dire need arises and will decide who if any meet whatever standards God has in mind.

Babies are not always created out of love. Might have been an accident. And not all children of the world live great lives. Some are starving and many are abused. It seems just too simple that God created us for us to love him and for him to love us. If God gave us free will, would he then have free will as well? If so, would his choices always be good and loving? Maybe that explains why there is good and bad, because God gave it all to us. I think we are just another anomaly that just became stronger and more clever than the rest of the animals in the world. And look what we have done to the world, dosen't seem like a place that would do too well in the future considering how we are treating Mother Earth.

According to the Bible, God created us to be an image of God's character and represent him on earth (to the animals perhaps, over which we are to have dominion - though remember this is in a vegetarian context since God gave humans plants as their food at this early stage before sin):
"So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth." And God said, "Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food"
(Genesis 1:27-29).
In Genesis 2 there is another creation story that gives more details about the role of humans. It seems to be saying that God created humans to work the ground, and to look after (literally "serve and protect") the garden in which he put them:
"When no siach (some category of plant like "bush") of the field was yet in the land and no eysev (another category of plant, maybe something like "crop") of the field had yet sprung up - for the LORD God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground, and a mist was going up from the land and was watering the whole face of the ground - then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground the LORD God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food..... The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to serve(or 'work') it and keep (or 'protect') it" (Genesis 2:5-9; 15).
ThusGod created us to be his representatives on earth, to be a picture or "image" of God, and we are the caretakers of the earth, we are to look after it.

Out of love. Think of a married couple who are completely happy with one another but they want a baby. Why? Because they love want to see a living reflection of their love. We are living reflections of God's love.
