I have a 17 year old and a 16 month old (yes, you read that right) and for both of them we did a Sesame Street theme. We just had family over--the aunts and grandparents. I had even saved the SS HAPPY BIRTHDAY banner from my oldest's birthday and used at my little man's party.

We planned it early enough to not interfere with nap, so we did a brunch type thing at 10:30 and served hash brown casserole, fruit, biscuits and gravy, bacon and sausage, those types of things. Then we opened presents and then we took the high chair outside and did cake. It was GREAT! It may be too cold to go outside for cake where you are, but I suspect you'll have a good time no matter what you do!

Have Fun and Congratulations!

For my daughters 1st bday we rented a community clubhouse and invited 40+ friends and family for a big dinner party. But it was SO overwhelming for her. Too many faces. Too many gifts.
For my son's 1st bday we had a small bbq at the house with about a dozen people and it was perfect. He loved just playing with balloons and eating cake.....
The 1st birthday party is really more for the parents. It's a time for us to take pictures and make a big fuss :) But the babies could be happy with something simple.

I recorded my son's first birthday. I kept it simple and invited family over for a small party. Now my son is three, and he loves to watch it.

Make 2 cakes. On the babies 1st birthday babies always get to just dig into their cake and you take pictures! Let him do whatever to his cake! The pictures are wonderful years to come! And everyone else eats the other cake.

something small and sweet you do not want to overwhelm him, just some friends your and his cake and some presents. Not longer then a few hours and after his nap not before
