It's the finish that you put on the wood that will determine how well they hold up. The wood never gets touched. Don't cut corners here. Get the best you can afford. Get a pro.
Swedish Finish & Moisture Cured Urethane are most durable but require skill.

I have had hard oak floors in most of the houses I have lived in. In the house that I grew up in still has the original floors. They have been there since the house was built in the 1930's. As far as I know they have only been restored once. The one time I had them done. If laid correctly, stained and varnished with the right things. Taken care of....they will last almost forever. The floors will withstand alot of traffic, more than carpet. Kids, animals, doesn't seem to matter. I am not saying they can't get scratched but that is easy enough to fix.

Yes. Just make sure that you don't get a soft wood like birch. It's pretty but it'll look bad in a short period of time. And make sure you have a "finish" put on the floor. (Not too glossy. You won't like it. It takes away from the look of the wood) If you take proper care of it you shouldn't have any trouble with it holding up.

it would be best to use maple and make sure you have it heavily finished ......do not use oak on any floor that may be near an area of severe moisture as after about ten years it will deteriorate beyond repairability

With the proper finish, e.g. polyurethane, wood floors will last for decades, if not centuries. Use normal care, and they will be beautiful forever.

I HAVE A HOME WITH HARDWOOD FLOORS AND THEY ARE THE BEST--I HAVE 3 DOGS AND 2 CATS AND MY FLOORS ARE GORGEOUS. OF COURSE, I DON'T HAVE ANY YOUNG CHILDREN RUNNING THEIR TOY CARS, ROLLER BLADES, SKATEBOARDS OVER THEM EITHER--BUT THEY RETAIN THEIR BEAUTY VERY NICELY.
