Several reasons. The main one is...."you know you have the right god when he hates all the same people you do." There are a lot of rules and things god tells you to hate in the Old Testement and there is a certain kind of person who LOVES long lists of "do not"s.
They will say "a lot" of the OT is still in effect. It's like, they follow the bits they WANT to. 10 Commandments, yes. Stoning people to death for picking up sticks on the Sabbath? No. And the yardstick for what they decide to follow and what they decide to toss...is arbitrary! Fun huh?

The reason we Christians often still refer to the Old Testament is because the Old and the New are both the Word of God. It's like a novel that comes in a series of two books, one part of the story is continued in the next book.
In the Old T. man sinned. Sin is only punishable by death, so they sacrificed animals to cover their sins. God sent prophets, then, to bring the people hope that he would send someone to die once and for all so that the sacrificing could stop. So that's where the New T. starts, where Jesus comes to the earth and makes the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. If you read through the first four books of the New T, you will notice that Jesus often quotes the Old T. actually. Jesus actually said once, "I didn't come to condemn the Law (that's what they called the Old T. back then), but I came to fulfill it." The New T. is the fulfillment of the Old.
The exciting part is that this is still alive today... Jesus paid the death penalty for you too! He's offering you the gift, now all you need to do is accept. He loves you!
Let me know if this helps or what you think. God bless you!

Because the Old Testament is all about Jesus who was the coming Messiah. The prophesies written several hundred years before Christ about Christ are the prophecies that Jesus fulfilled upon his arrival. Read the book of Isaiah and Ezekial and you will see that Jesus was written about long ago. The reason why we must know the Old Testament is because if we did not then alot of what is said in the New Testament would be mistranslated or misunderstood.
Hope this help..The Bible is all about Jesus.

It is right for the most part. The Old Testement contains other things like proverbs and songs of praise and lessons that can be learned from the stories included in it. The OT contains much truth that can be still used today. Also because it does include prophecies of Jesus we can show Jews who believe in the Old Trestement how Jesus fulfills them and how He is the Messiah

The old testament talks about Jesus. Jesus referred to the old testament and quoted it many times. The old testament is the history of the Jewish people and their relationship with God. In the old testament God the Father does most of the talking while in the New testament God the Son does. They go together to tell the full story about Jesus, God, and our salvation.

You have bits and pieces in place. The Old Testament is a History of the Jewish people and the foretelling of the coming Messiah - Jesus and also foretelling of the end times. After Jesus came, he fulfilled most of the prophecy, everything pertaining to himself with the exception of the second coming. Jesus did not come to do away with the Old Testament Law, he even told us to continue to keep the law. He better explained the law and made a new promise with Jew and gentile alike. The former promise still hold for the Jewish people though, they are the Chosen people of God, Jesus makes it possible for Gentiles (all who are not Jewish) to also inherit his promise. In other words, he extends the promise to Gentile to be grafted into the promise, the Jewish are the natural heirs though. All this, Gods Covenant (promise) comes ONLY through acceptance of Jesus as Savior and by following him with your heart and giving your life to him to lead.

The arrival of Christ and His teaching fulfill many promises and prophesies of the Old Testament. It does not discredit the good messages and the instructions in the Old Testament. Christ added to the knowledge of God and what we need to do as humans to become more godlike. The New Testament does not cancel out the Old Testament. They work together to increase understanding of our spiritual existence.

I am with you - I always thought Jews followed the old testament and Christians followed the new, but I meet a lot of Christians that seem to know far more about the old testament than the new.
Peace!

We are instructed to compare scriptures with scriptures. If theres something you cant understand in the New Testament, there's a good possibility it can be found also in the Old Testamant, or some of the other writtings. Jesus instructed us to "Search the Scriptures." And he compare the Kingdom of Heaven, like treasures hid in a field. Studying the Bible is like being on a treasure hunt. Where you have to search inorder to find just one of the golden nuggest, burried in the pages of the Bible.

The OT is completed by the NT.
The OT prophets prophesied about the coming of the Messiah.
Therefore, both testaments are needed.
