We have a miniature daschund that just turned 1 year on Dec 17, 2006. She only weighs 6 lbs. A true miniature has to be under 11lbs at 1year. if i am not mistaken. Any dog will cost quite a lot in vet bills. Daschunds are a little more acceptable to reactions from the shots they are given, so I had more vet visits as we spaced the shots apart and did not give as many at 1 time. The main advise is to keep them away from the trash cans. Mine got into the bathroom trash can and ate a tampon. the vet bill was $1,800.00. they had to remove 4 inches of her intestines. Major Survery!! she almost did not make it. she was 10 months old when this happened. we have a septic system and can't throw things in the toliet, or replacing the septic would cost more than the surgery. around $15,000. I went out and got cosco diaper pails to keep her out. Hope this helps alittle good luck they are such sweet dogs

All dogs need the same shots and they will cost the same. They need the shots at 6-8 weeks old, 12 weeks old and a booster at 16 weeks of age, then again every 12 months. They still need to be wormed and flea treated at the same age but flea treatment will cost a bit less as they are a small breed. Food will be cheaper (once again, because they are smaller), a premium quality dog food would cost around $10-$20 for a big bag. When you fix the dog, it will be cheaper than it would a large breed because small breeds (obviously) weigh less.

I'm not going to type everything I know about them up on here so I'll give you a few websites for YOU to check up on. The long hairs tend to be friendlier than the short hairs. Many of them have "nervous bladders " and pee when you talk to them or anytime they are excited.I work in a kennel/grooming salon and see a lot of them. The females are nice, but the males can be nippy. You would need to watch the diet of a dachshund. If they become overweight they could develop back trouble.
shots. In the south we pay @ $ 400 the first year & $150 every year after. Some pet stores offer shot clinics and they cost @ 1/3 that.

Everything costs about the same as a normal dog, only food shouldn't cost as much as the tend not to eat as much as a big dog if you stop them. Careful not to over-feed because they gain weight easily, they also have a tendency to have back and hip problems, but I have one and my grandparents have two without any problems so far.

The shots, should run the same as any other dog. And information wise, I can give you a few tips:

Keep them on a leash or in a fenced yard, dachshunds love to explore and will run away.

When lettign them onto a couch/bed ( if you do) Make sure to help them up and down as to prevent back and hip problems later on.

Make sure not to give them to many treats, because their chowhounds and will gain weight easily, once again running into hip and back problems.

Well, that's all I have right now, if you need anything else feel free to contact me; and good luck with your new dachshund, their awsoem little dogs. =)

Ive got a little 3 year old dapple daschund named "Juicy Fruit." well first off, hes a sexy little man, hes a handsome little man, hes just good looking. the 1 and only bad thing about him is that they are(i think) the hardest breed to potty train.... and, and they are, by far, thee most affectionate little dog Ive ever owned.

the vet bills and shots are the same for anydog, well it might be more for a big dog, so its not a problem for u, they're generally sweet little dogs, playful and funny. im sure if u did a yahoo! search on it, there is probably a website with the info u r looking for.

A puppy needs a DHLPPC at 8, 12, and 16 weeks.
At 16 weeks a rabies too.
A year later they need a rabies and DHLPPC and rabies.
After that they need a booster every three years for both rabies and DHLPPC.
Bordatella/also known as kennel cough- boarding and kenneling.

See the mother of the dog. If its good tempered and generally quiet and the puppy picks you, go for it.
