I recently got my braces off and my gums are swollen. What is a good way to get my teeth back to normal? (They were swollen with the braces on).

The most common cause of gum swelling is plaque and build up of calcular deposits (tartar) on your teeth. Visit the dentist and have your teeth scaled.

Some people on the other hand have "over-reactive" gums. Braces cause their gums to be hyperplastic and consequently appear swollen. If this is the case, the treatment would be gingivectomy or slicing away of the hyperplastic gingiva.

Visit your dentist so s/he can determine the cause of your swollen gums and treat it appropriately.

My dentist had my son (age 15) with swollen inflamed gums to brush his teeth and gums 3 times a day for 3 or 4 minutes each time. In less than 2 weeks his gums no longer bled, the swelling was gone and the inflammation was gone as well.

Rinsing with Listerine regularly now (along with brushing) seems to keep it under control.

If your swelling is from recently removed braces, your gums should get better fast.

Happy smiling.

It would probably be a good idea to get a good, professional cleaning to remove the calculus/tartar that probably formed while you had braces since it was harder to floss, etc. Another good device, in addition to brushing and flossing regularly, is a "sulcabrush". It is a really thin brush, almost like a toothpick with a brush on it, that you can use to brush right in between your teeth and along the gumline. It will remove more plaque and stimulate the gums and (hopefully) you should be back to normal soon. =)

Dissolve 2 tablespoons of salt in warm water and rinse your mouth. Do this as often as you can until your gums feel better.

A cocktail of Listerine and salt.
Rinse your mouth out and spit it out.
