I've picked up the habit, but I have really nice hands (if I do say so myself!), and I don't want to hurt them in the long run.

The idea that cracking your knuckles will cause medical problems or ugly hands is a myth. In between each of our joints is cartiledge and some stuff that is like a gel. The gel stuff gets air in it from time to time and cracking your knuckles just lets the air out. A lot of noise over nothing.

Nice little bit of reassurance there.
The truth is that the knuckle has a sac of a lubricant between the bones to keep them from touching ('twould be very painful, that!) The "crack" you hear is the snap of the lubricant sac tensing and then releasing. You can't think that this repeated stress won't result in some damage to the sac. If it does/when it does, then you'll have not "arthritis" but merely the pain of bone on bone action.

I was watching a show once and there was a doctor talking about things that deal with health. He said that cracking your knuckles doesn't affect your knuckles at all.

Some people say yes, some people say no. The noise comes from the shifting fluid between your joints. I guess excessive popping might later cause problems if you have a problem with your synovial fluid. But, if you wind up being prone to arthritis anyway because of your bloodline...you are going to have problems either way.

The general thought is that it does not cause problems.
Some have argued that it causes tiny bits of scar tissue, though this is not proven.
Some say that it is the release of compressed gasses in the joint capsule and it is harmless.
The best advice would be to ask your Dr., otherwise just err on the side of caution and don't.

No, this doesn't cause anyother problem than the sound it makes. Many people for years thought this caused arthritis but it does not. I have been cracking mine for decades and nothing has happened but the desire to do it again.

Doubt it. It actually loosens up your joints and helps them to relax. The arthritis thing is just a myth and doesn't even exist, so don't worry yourself. :)

It isn't that bad, but watch yourself! If you continually crack them, it can cause arthritis. Try to tell yourself not to. Just stretch your fingers back.
