WIthout any further information, there is no way that anyone can possibly answer this question.

Further, this is a medical judgement and not a legal one. In fact, under most circumstances, the law has no place in this one. Even as a medical judgement only, this is something that can only be answered with full information about the patient, with an exam of the patient, and by a doctor who specializes in pain management. Also, even with pain patients, doctors distinguish between cancer and non-cancer pain. But high doses of pain meds, including narcotics are possible with either.

My ex was a heroin addict and abuses oxycontin. It is synthetic Heroin (Opiate).....Highly Addictive and Illegal too without a Rx. Oxycontin is for people with Major Back problems. Phentyanyl is prescribed for Cancer patients and is also Highly addictive. These are some of the Strongest Drugs out there. Does someone have cancer or break their back!!! If not, sounds like someone has a drug problem.......Good Luck

Oh, Oxycontin can also be cooked and injected by an addict. I know this because I tried so hard to help him for six years. OC's go for a dollar per 1mg on the streets (80mg = $80.) Sadly he never quit and I had to tell him to leave.

P.S. Every doctor has a DEA # and when they prescribe a medication and it is taken to a pharmacy it is recorded and the DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) monitors all doctors Rx's on these types of drugs and if they see a doctor prescribing unusual amounts they will investigate....many doctors have been put on probation or lost their license because of this.

There are no legal limits to narcotic ranges, although these ranges would likely be reported by the pharmacist filling them. There is also no real physical limit as well. The body adapts and becomes resistant to ranges of narcotics as they are given over time, it is possible although HIGHLY unlikely that someone is on the doses you have described. However, if titrated up slowly over a very long period of time, it is feasible. To a narcotic naive person, very small doses could be fatal though the mechanism of depressed respiration's.

For Reference: beginning doses of Oxycontin are 15mg twice a day and fentanyl is given either by shot or by patch starting range of 25mcg (micrograms.)

4 80mg oxycontins would kill someone if taken at once. Even with a very high tolerance, 16 80's id more than anyone could take in a day.

Both possible and legal, though certainly uncommon. If a person is requiring this much narcotic pain medicine, then alternative options such as an intrathecal pain pump are in order. I have seen people on nearly this much before, but they did much better on alternative therapies (not alternative medicine). Regarding legality, this is perfectly legal as long as the physician is in good standing with the DEA.

Work for a family practice physician and he would never prescribe that kind of medicine....anyone in that much pain needs to be seen either in cancer center, pain clinic, or a drug rehab, or nursing home and even then not that amount......Someone come in saying they needed those Rxs refilled and wanted to see the doctor I would not give them an appt but would refer them back to whoever prescribed them to begin with

legally? sure, it's not outright illegal, but that is certainly an inordinate amount of narcotics. it's true that people can develop tolerance to narcotics and it's theoretically possible that someone could actually be taking that much medication for therapeutic purposes, but let's face it- whoever's got that much narcs is probably doing something illegal with it, like selling it for profit.

Do you mean by different Doctors? No, it is called, fishing. It is when people will intentionally go to different Doctors to seek pain medication, without telling the other Doctors.

I'm guessing it would be possible, and legal, for someone to be prescribed these amounts of these medications. Is the person terminally ill, or suffering from cancer?

It's highly illegal. If the person is still alive, I doubt they know it. Could this person be terminally ill?
