First, since you are working, you probably have a little money in your pocket--enough for a motel for the night, so don't panic, things always look better in the light of day. At the motel, you can look in the phone book for traveler's aid., or call the non-emergency police number and explain your situation and ask their advice. Since you are going HOME, there is probably someone there you can turn to in an emergency, so you aren't totally alone.
Then it depends on how bad your car is broken. But the key is--don't be afraid to ask for help, even if you must pay someone back later. We all break down sometimes, it's a normal part of life, even if unpleasant. Best of luck.

Sorry 'bout the loser answers up there.
Your question: this is why you take a credit card with you on a trip. I like Discover because of the cash back, but the fact is that a tow company will likely want either visa or mastercard. Few people have a couple hundred buck on them and really shouldn't have that much cash on a trip anyway.
One good piece of advice (which I ended up having to follow) is to call the police either from your cell phone or someone else's (people will call the police for you, generally.) They can tell you whether staying in the car is or isn't safe. They can also order up a tow, tho the one's the PD call are more expensive.
I recommend that you not worry about nor even expect to get home soon. Stuck is stuck, and people understand. You could have the tow company tow your car home for you . . . he'd be happy to rake in the $$$. But you likely don't want a $3,000 bill next month.
Pray, and expect to be there overnight. In the morning, work first thing on getting the car serviced and don't stop to eat until it's being dealt with.

I'd probably get it towed to the closest place and find a cheap motel for the night.
The next day I would check the status and hope it could be repaired quickly. If not I might have someone come and pick me up.
Although, if it were going to be done the next day it would probably be just as cheap and less hassle to stay another day.
Maybe get a better Roadside service policy- but I'm not sure you'll find anything reasonable to cover 300 miles.

Sleep in the car for the night if possible. Get a friend to come get you, take a bus, hitch. Hopefully the car is an easy fix and you can drive it the next day. Most tow policies cover the first 50 or 100 miles then you pay. Get towed home and pay the difference.

I'd hope my AAA membership was paid up and my American Express Card was in good standing and that my cell phone got a signal. I'd hope the road service responded or call 911 and ask for an assist from the troupers and hope that they could roust someone out to get me to a repair place, motel and rental car place. Now I'm going to have nightmares.

I call help for from my cell phone. If I my cell phone is dead, I might walk for help or stay in the car and wait. When I saw a car coming, I might go to the middle of the street and tell to stop and help me.

hope that aliens don't abduct you.
then again if they are nice aliens maybe they can give you and your car a ride back to town.
you might want to consider getting a job closer to home, that 4-6 hour drive must suck.
