You should do whatever it is that will make you happy. I think it's ok to get married and then have a big reception. You can always have another ceremony later on to renew your vows and your family can be a part of that.

Get married in puerto rico just u and ur fiance. ur family will just have to accept ur decision. a puerto rican wedding sounds great. i say call the hotel/resort and see how they can accomodate. Puerto rico is beautiful so i imagine u can catch some great photos. my wedding was less glamourous, it was at the courthouse and i thought it was flabulous. my family was mad but they accepted.
a wedding is soppose to be a day u remember not everyone else. i say send everyone a photo of u two with a wedding annoucement.
btw: puerto rico is a part of the united states so the wedding would be recognized where u live.

Sounds like a good idea to me, but you're the one who has to deal with your family. If you getting married elsewhere will create an irrepairable rift between you and your family, I would suggest biting the bullet and trying for a more local wedding to keep them happy. Yes, it's "your" day, but it won't help you in the long run to have the rest of your family resent you and your husband.
Talk to them, and see what the feedback is. Pehaps, having a small ceremony in Puerto Rico and a larger reception when you're back home will not cause a problem with them.

Make sure your marriage is recognized in the State or Province that you live in. Sometimes when you marry in another country it is not legal where you live. Get married there then go to the JP when you get back and please the families with a small ceremony
