I've been seeing this guy and the other night he kept commenting about other women at his work party, which is totally not him (usally is very sweet and kind). He knows I'm will to have a 3some either way, so was that his way of asking?

I don't think that is his way of asking. I think he just wants your input on who to bring into your bed. If the two of you have discussed it, then help him pick the person out, the two of you should agree on the person or it won't be as much fun for the other person that had no say in the matter.
