Itdoes vary from state to state. In California it is 60lbs or 6 years old. I work at a public Health department and I am in the car seat safety program.

A child needs to be BOTH 40 lbs. in weight and 4 yrs old to stop using a car seat.

That's a minimum. It is generally recommended to keep them in some type of booster seat for another 20 lbs or so.

If these other answers know what they're talking about it must vary, because I know it is 40/4 years in Ohio.

you do not would desire to end applying a vehicle seat or booster seat. i'm unsure of what your state rules are, yet in Ontario Canada it is going by using weight. Our regulation states that a toddler 70 lbs or over would be constrained by using a seatbelt. Any weight under which could be in a booster seat or vehicle seat. examine alongside with your community police station for information on your section.

you can use a backless booster up to 80 lbs. Most kids will want to be out before then but its safer to keep them in it.
