My girlfriend is very emotional and it hurts me when she starts crying. I have hugged and she still cries. I'd like to know how I could help her feel better about herself... and have the courage to be a strong young when her father goes and if something was to happen to him.

Okay first of all I would like to commend you for standing by her and thinking of what you could do to make her feel better sounds like you really lover her. I am an Army Bratt growing up I knew that my dad could be called away on a moments notice and we would't see him for a long time or know where he was. It is hard and sometimes the only thing a person can do to help is be there listen and hold them when they cry.
A lot of people tend to think that going to going to fight for our country is noble and it is but is also very hard on the families left to pray for their loved one to be safe and come home. Eventually she will learn to deal with this and put it in a place inside so she can function day to day until then just do what ur doing now, even though it doesn't feel like enough it means more than you can imagine.

Being supportive and with her will help her accept the fact that her father is going to Iraq faster and knowing that she has a caring boyfriend will help her emotions as well. For example, she's sad and she's crying. Tell her that you're there for her and if she would like to go to the movies or a night out on the town. That will help take her mind off things for a while.
