Hi, my 11wk old Dachshund has started to get skittish toward people, my dad, nephew, and growled at my neighbor after my Dachshund barked....How do I begin to solve this problem??? Thank you!!!

My dachshung was shy when he was a puppy too. My vet suggested that I take him places with me to get him used to being around people and it worked. I would take him to the pet store with me when I was there buying supplies for him. I took him to the park on weekends and I would take him to sidewalk cafes that allowed dogs.
He got used to people in no time.

Socialization is the key. Also, when you meet people pick up your Dachshund. They feel much more comfortable when you are holding them and greeting someone they don't know, especially at that age. Your Dachshund will become more confident and will not be skittish as he/she matures.

Unfortunately, dachshunds seem to be skittish toward people they don't know. I think you should carry dog treats in your pocket and give them to people you see, like the mailman, neighbors, friends, etc. Have them give you dog a treat and have them scratch his ears or pet him. He really needs to be socialized now before he gets any older, otherwise he will be afraid his whole life. Please take him with you to stores, friends or whatever. He needs to see as many people as possible and have a positive experience each time. You might in role him in a puppy class.

You'ld be skittish too if all you ever saw was feet and looming giants leaning over you. Have people sit on the floor and get to his level sometimes, make the feet go away. It's very possible that totally by accident he has been bumped, and became scared..
