I just changed my birth control 3 weeks ago. I was on ortho tri cyclen Lo and I changed to the regular ortho tri cyclen. My bc didn't lapse. I changed b/c I was having some problems with the lo dose. Anyway, this would normally be my ovulation week...if I were not on bc. But, I've noticed all day that I've had cramps on my right side off and on. They hurt but are very short. It is not a dull cramp. I can tell exactly where it is. Could I be ovulating??

Yes...I know that you are not supposed to ovulate while taking bc...but like I said...I've been having some problems with my other low dose bc and I just switched.

If you increased the dosage rather than decreasing it, it's highly unlikely that you are ovulating. However, if you are in doubt, contact your doctor.

No birth control pill is perfect, and it is possible (though highly unlikely) that you are 1) ovulating or 2) pregnant. If the pain is sharp, get to an ER - an ectopic pregnancy is an unlikely but finite possiblity. Better to be safe than sorry.

It might not have been the ovary. It might have been a gas pain that was in that area. Or possibly a muscle pain there. Did you miss any doses or take any late this past week? If you miss a dose, it could be that you were not protected during that time (or if the dose was taken much more than 3 hours from the normal time). Are you on an estrogen based pill or a progesterone pill? The progesterone pill works differently and you can still release eggs. I would be careful about things (like stay away from alcohol and take folic acid) and test when you can to make sure you are not pregnant. You also might want to use other protection if that happens again just to be safe.

No. You don't ovulate while you're on birth control. Hormones released by your birth control cause the lining of the uterus to change, causing ovulation to halt.

It sounds like your body is trying to respond as best as it can to the change in hormones. While it may not seem like a big change, to your body it is.

Where on the right side is it shooting from? Is it a sharp pain? It may be time to see the doctor, and it may not be related to your BC at all. It could be an appendicitis or something else.

Maybe. But don't be surprised if you feel different on the regular Ortho TriCyclen because it has a larger amount of hormones than the Ortho TriCyclen Lo.

You must be off birth control in order for ovulation to take place properly.
