A friend of mine is trying to lose some weight in her thighs, but she can't tell whether it's fat or muscle? Is there a way to tell the difference, and if it's muscle, can she decrease it?

working less of that area will decrease the muscle but increase in fat. all the lost muscle has to be replaced with something and thats fat. yumm. i suggest if she doesn't want terminator legs or giganto fatty legs but tone legs she do yoga or light running.

lv_consul is right. one way to tell if her thighs are consisted of muscle or fat is getting her bodyfat (BF) checked. the best way to lose muscle is just being a couch potato and not work out. no offense, but I highly doubt that your friend has enough muscle in her thighs to maker them look big.

very easy to tell fat from muscle. either way she should get her body fat checked.

there is no way to reduce muscle locally just like you can't spot reduce fat. the human body is either in a anabolic state or a catabolic state. putting oneself in a catabolic state is easy to do, skip meals, eat poorly and over exercise.

that being said if she wants to lose muscle in her thighs it will be at the expense of a loss of muscle in her entire body, which will cause a decrease in her resting metabolic rate (RMR).

Muscle is hard fat is flappy. Is there cellulite- most likely fat. There are scales that measure fat content. Also find out your BMI. http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/ put in your height and weight at this site.
