In some states, life in prison simply means 20 or 25 years. Also, most states give "good time" to prisoners. The average is 1 for 2. In other words, you get 1 day off your sentence for every 2 that you spend without getting in trouble. So that 15 year sentence? Yeah, it's actually more like 10. Did someone ask about victims rights? Ha, that's a myth.

This is because of the parole system. While given "life" there can still be some eligibility for parole. (Another question all together) When that person comes up for parole, the board can also look at that additional 25 years and base their decision on that.

There have been cases where a guy has gotten more than one life sentence. The reason is that you are tried for each individual crime and get a seperate punishment for each one. So if you commit two robberies you are going to be tried for each one and if you get 5 years for both you are going to have to serve both. In the case of a guy like Bundy who has killed many people he is given a sentence for each they have found him guilty of. It is a technicallity.

That way, they serve at least a full 18 months instead of the two nights that the life sentence carries.
