...does anyone have a golden retriever with runny eyes? My vet is saying he needs to have surgery as his lower eyelids are irritating him. But the one eye that does not need the surgery also "runs."
I know G.R.'s are prone to eye problems, but is anyone familiar with this???? (I've also tried the stuff recommended to remove the staining (he looks like a raccoon) this causes, but that doesn't help much!

I have heard of a condition similar to this. It happens when the eyelid is turned in, the hair and lashes irritate the eye. If not taken care of then it could cause more than irritation , it could cause blindness.

This is why it so important to buy from a breeder who does the proper screening & certifcation on their breeding dogs: OFA for hips & CERF on eyes. Reputable breeders are working to improve the breed & eliminate these genetic problems - anyone who doesn't is backyard breeding to make personal profit only. Sorry you got scammed, but learn & next time buy from a member of the Golden Retriever Club that certifies.

Golden Retrievers are prone to allergies. sometimes if they are fed an inappropriate diet they can get eye (and ear and feet and skin, etc) irritations.

Avoid food with corn. Avoid any food you can buy in a big box store.
I'd seek a second opinion.

our dog has this it is a poodle and I just keep the eye washed and clean ( she hates but will put up with a face wash)
then it is not so bad. so it is best to keep clean daily
