Take her to the Dr.
My son used to do that too! He'll be 3 Jan 24th.
Turns out he couldn't get enough oxygen in his blood, he has mild asthma that would act up in the winter, whenever he got a cold, or ran around a lot during the day.
Treated with nebulizer only when nesessary. Now he sleeps thoughtout the night! Coughing was the most important warning sign, cough medicine won't make it go away either, that was another clue that something was going on. Hope she's ok.

Hello there - kids cough at night either from asthma or irritation of the lungs. This can occur from post nasal drip where mucus slides down the throat and into the lungs. This can cause inflammation of the lining of the lungs and narrowing of the pathways. Has your daughter got or had a cold recently? Does she get hayfever? My son gets it all the time because he sleeps on his back. Everytime he gets a cold he coughs himself silly - only at night. If you think it is caused by post nasal drip, lie her on her front and also try a drying nasal spray for a night or two. There are also medications which minimise inflammation and runny noses all in one bottle. Otherwise if that doesn't work, it could be asthma - kids with asthma will cough at night when they lie down. If it is a dry irritated cough at night or after exercise, it could be asthma and she will need to go to a doctor as continued asthma can damage the lining of the lungs permanently. best of luck.

You should get your child checked at your doctors office. If she has just an infect, it may be nothing serious. It may be allergic, dustmites maybe (inside the linen of the bed)or washing powder, or something asthmatic. But from afar it is very hard to tell, therefore she should be presented to a doctor. For a small child coughing can be dangerous when they can't breath, either because they are cramping up, or because in case of allergic condition the swelling of the throat won't let them breathe. This can be quite scary and should be medically checked. You would need some inhaler as an emergency rescue. Cheers

It does have to do with him laying down for a long period and the drainage, however small, is irritating his throat and chest. In addition to some of the other suggestions, you can also try giving him a warm, steamy shower or bath before bed and keeping a vaporizer on in his room. Elevate the head of his bed or give him 2 pillows to prop him up a bit so he isn't completely flat in bed. If you can get him to drink some warm fluid - apple juice, tea or something right before bed, it might help. Before giving any more OTC meds, call your ped. A cough can linger for a couple of weeks so they may not want to see him but might be able to give a script for a cough medicine.

At night, drainage from her nasal passages is more likely to get into her lungs because of gravity, and the fact that she's not swallowing as she sleeps. Therefore, she coughs more.
If this is a continuing problem, take her to see your doctor and explain the situation. It may be that she is slightly allergic to something, and that can almost certainly be treated.

It could be a respiratory infection--they get worse at night--or it could be asthma. Talk to your doctor and either case, put a cool mist humidifier in her room and use it when she sleeps. My son was dx w/ asthma and the humidifier really helps!!
Good luck!

It's the laying down position, obviously. The flem collects in her lungs when she's laying down. You could try propping her up and also using a vaporizer/humidifier in her room at night.
