does sugar affect it? because when i tried hawaiian punch it took like 2 hours to melt the ice. im not sure if it is just the food coloring, sugar, or just the temperature.

If there was enough to color the surface of the ice, the melting would be faster. There would be increased heat adsorption from the sun. Basically, the darker a surface, the hotter it gets from the sun. A lighter color will reflect more of the sun's energy and stay cooler. Those of you who ever owned a black car know this is real.

that depends on what was used to make the food coloring .
if oil was used then yes each Little bit of the stuff that makes food coloring needs to be considered so to find the answer one route to go is to find out what food coloring is made of .
then discover what each one of the ingredients does when placed on ice
but i would say that the ingredients in the food coloring don't so much make ice melt faster but instead change the temp at which the ice is formed. if the oil freezes at a lower temp then water which it does then if enough was mixed with the water the result would be that the water froze at a lower temp. well anything that starts at a lower temp. has farther or longer to go until it is back up to the point at which it melts.
i hope this was of some help to you

In my opinion yes. i learned in gr12 biology that in the electromagnetic spectrum purple light has the highest energy and red the lowest. Thus,if the cube of ice was purple it would reflect purple light and therefore would melt slower. I don't think that color makes a noticeable difference! Just theoretically.
