I run 12k once a week. Every now and then, the side of my abs (sometimes left, sometimes right) cramps out. It happens any time during the run. It forces me to slow down into a walk until it goes away before I can resume running. It's very annoying.

Hydrate and take potassium in your warm up, and work on your breathing--breath deeper, to get more oxygen to all muscle groups--and possibly your stance and gait could use some tweaking. Watch videos, if you can, of your posture and stride during a race, and look for anything that needs attention. Best of luck.

I'd be curious about what you are eating or drinking prior to your run. I'd probably consider changing this and the problem may go away. The other question is do you only run once each week for 12k or do you run several times each week and the 12k is one of those runs. If its the former, then you should add more running during other times during the week. If its the latter, then definitely something diet related.

That has happened to me so many times it's not funny. When you drink too much water before you run crammping is a promise. So, try a few sips or just one swallow. Also, breathing on rhythm helps too. Listen to your body and find the beat.

There are 2 reason...2 of them have already been stated....but you're supposed to be breathing out of your nose instead of your mouth, cause it helps you from getting tired easily, and you have to stretch out your muscles, and you won't cramp up as much...Hope that helps :] !!

Hydrate your body the night before. The day of keep your fluids down to a minimum. After the run rehydrate.

The symtems your describing is most likely dehydration. Ive had it before and I hate it.
Make sure you drink plenty of water and/or gatorade. Its better to over drink than to underdrink.

you should also try running more often, your body needs to adjust to running and only running once a week does not allow for that.

Eat lots of bananas. It gives you potassium which prevents you from cramping up.

You are not breathing correctly .. you need to breathe in through your nose and exhale out of your mouth and you need to keep it at a steady breathing pattern.
